Support available for vulnerable borough residents during national lockdown
A helpline is available for vulnerable residents across the borough to register for support such as access to food and medicine during the nationwide lockdown.
On Saturday (31 October), Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a second national lockdown would take place between Thursday 5 November and Wednesday 2 December, following a rise in the number of people contracting COVID-19.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is working with Basingstoke Voluntary Action and Hampshire County Council to provide assistance to residents in need of support with the help of local community organisations.
Residents with an increased risk of illness are being encouraged to use priority slots provided by supermarkets for shopping, prescription delivery services and support from family and friends.
However, residents who do not have this support are being encouraged to register for help by calling the Hampshire Coronavirus Support and Helpline on 0333 370 4000.
The helpline is available between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Thursday and between 9am and 4.30pm on Fridays.
Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Partnerships Cllr Simon Bound: “We know this new lockdown will be a worrying time for residents who want to protect themselves from COVID-19 but may struggle to get access to essential supplies such as food and medicine.
“We have been working closely with Basingstoke Voluntary Action and community groups and volunteers who played a vital role in supporting our communities earlier this year and we are here and ready to help you. If you need support, or know anyone who does, please call the helpline so we can help them urgently.
“I would like to thank all of the volunteers and community organisations who have once again come together so quickly to provide much needed assistance to those most in need across our borough.”
Chief Executive at Basingstoke Voluntary Action Tony Capon said: “The lockdown earlier this year demonstrated the community spirit that we have across our borough and it was truly inspiring to see everyone pull together to help those who needed it most.
“I am pleased that we have been able to work quickly with the council and volunteers to stand up the support available for residents who need a helping hand.”
